Why do some people have thin eyelashes?

Several factors are responsible for thin eyelashes, the most common being,

  • Nutritional deficiency
  • Genetics
  • Eye infection
  • Hormonal abnormalities
  • Rubbing your eyes because of some irritation
  • Medical condition

What is hypotrichosis?

Hypotrichosis is a medical term that is defined as lack of eyelashes. Dr. Lawrence Green, a practicing dermatologist and Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the George Washington University School of Medicine told Health Central about hypotrichosis, and its causes. He said,

“Hypotrichosis means a decrease in the number of eyelashes when compared to the normal level. Eyelashes do help protect the eye, but you don’t need to have a full amount to have adequate protection. Complete absence of eyelashes does leave your eyes more open to the environment and without protection. Hypotrichosis, or decrease in number of eyelashes, can be caused by autoimmune diseases (such as alopecia areata), trauma, someone with a habit of pulling them out on their own, some unusual infections (like leprosy), hormone problems (such as low thyroid levels), chemotherapy, radiation, or just plain aging normally.”

If you do not remove your eye makeup before hitting the bed, you may be causing your delicate lashes to fall out.

To enjoy thicker and longer eyelashes, you need to first, come up with a proper eye routine. These home remedies for thick eyelashes can help you enhance your eyelash growth. You must remember, however, that the effects of these home remedies will be different for each individual who tries them. Also, you may have to give more than one remedy a go to find out which one works best for you.

Castor oil has properties that stimulate follicles and nourish our lashes. It can serve as a great remedy for glossy and voluminous lashes. Our eyelashes have micro-organisms that curb its growth. Castor oil helps fight these organisms.

  • Apply castor oil on your lashes every night, before hitting the sack. Use a clean cotton swab or brush for the application.
  • Alternatively, to your castor oil, add a couple of drops of vitamin E oil. Apply it on your lashes, and leave it on overnight. Remove the oil with lukewarm water, the next morning.
  • You can also mix a tablespoon of castor oil with some fresh aloe vera gel. Apply the blend on your eyelashes using a clean brush or clean cotton swab. Leave it on for the night, and rinse it off the next morning. Follow this remedy for 3 months at least, for positive results.

2. Olive oil

Like castor oil, olive oil is also a superb home remedy for longer and thicker eyelashes. It contains vitamin E and oleic acid, which both nourish and add size to our lashes. Olive oil also darkens the eyelashes.

  • Heat olive oil.
  • Once it is lukewarm, dip a clean cotton swab, or preferably, an old mascara stick in the oil, and apply the oil onto your lashes. Leave it on through the night, and wash it with lukewarm water the next morning.
  • This remedy must be repeated daily at least a couple of months for best results.

3. Brush your eyelashes

Getting rid of dirt and dust from your lashes can also enhance lash growth. Brush your lashes regularly to prevent clogged pores. Brushing also encourages improved blood circulation. Moreover, the nutrients reaach the lash if you brush on a daily basis.

  • Dip your eyelash brush in a few drops of essential vitamin E oil. You can also dip the soft-bristled brush in petroleum jelly.
  • Now using the brush, apply the oil/jelly on your lashes.
  • Brush your lashes slowly and gently. Draw upward strokes, from the lash roots to the tip.
  • You need to brush your lashes regularly, for five minutes twice a day for the results you desire.

  • With a few drops of shea butter or petroleum jelly, massage along  your eyelids.

  • Let the tea sit for 20 minutes.

A proper diet, one that is healthy and balanced, is crucial to get thicker eyelashes. You must be aware of how we need the right nutrition for thicker, shinier and stronger hair. Similarly, we need a proper supply of minerals, vitamins, and protein to grow eyelashes that we will be proud of!

Vitamins A, B, C and E must be included in your diet, and so should be iron, copper, zinc and selenium.
