There are a number of causes for an uneven skin tone. The most common causes being,

  • Prolonged exposure to the sun: Prolonged exposure to sunlight causes an over-production of melanin in your skin, leading to the occurrence of dark patches or strange tan lines (especially if you wear glasses) on your face.
  • Hormonal problems: Hormonal imbalances can lead to the occurrence of dark patches on your face, especially due to the over-secretion of sebum in some parts of your face.
  • Pimples, acne, etc.,: We’ve all had pimples at least once in our lives (although if you’ve had it just once in your life, you’re probably a demigod or a Disney princess). We’ve all popped at least a pimple or two that has led to scarring that we’ve hastily tried to get rid of by scratching at it and ended up with pretty permanent scars on our face.
  • Hyperpigmentation: This may happen due to hormonal imbalances or even due to excessive sun exposure. Hyperpigmentation results in freckles which, if not dealt with ASAP, will darken and eventually become more permanent dark spots.

We know how unseemly an uneven skin tone can be, and how its effects are more than just skin-deep. So we scoured the earth to find 12 superb home remedies for uneven skin tone! Let’s take a look:

Home remedies for uneven skin tone

1. Baking soda

Let’s get one thing clear first. Baking soda is bae. It is the solution to pretty much all of life’s problems. Teeth too yellow? Rub some baking soda. Dishes too dirty? Rub some baking soda. Clothes have an ugly stain? Rub some baking soda. Aliens invading planet earth and enslaving all of mankind? Rub some baking soda!

So, obviously, when you have skin problems, baking soda is your best friend. Baking soda is an amazing bio-exfoliator. It scrubs away your dead skin, leaving your skin feeling supple and fresh. This helps deal with the hyperpigmentation and acne scarring, thus helping deal with your uneven skin tone. Plus, it’s not as harmful as the synthetic beads you find in exfoliating face washes and scrubs, that do you more harm than good. Simply mix a tablespoon of baking soda with some water to make a thick paste and apply it to your face. Let it set (takes around 3 minutes), then rub the damaged areas gently with your finger tips and finally wash it off with water. Repeat this at least once a week for beautiful glowing skin!

Papaya has bleaching properties that will help even out your skin tone, especially if you have melanin patches or hyperpigmentation problems. You can incorporate papaya in your diet for a more permanent solution to the problem (so that you may eventually have perfect glowy tv commercial skin). You can add to that by rubbing raw papa on your face (especially on the problem areas) daily, to speed up the process and give you a lovely even skin tone!

3. Yogurt mask

A DIY yogurt mask is an excellent remedy for uneven skin tone that will leave you with beautiful glowing skin. Yogurt has exfoliating and bleaching properties that will not only scrub off the flaky pigmented skin, but will also help lighten tanned and scarred skin! Simply take a tablespoon of organic, flavorless and colorless yogurt; add a tablespoon of water to it and beat well. Apply the mask all over the face and neck and leave it to dry for 20-30 minutes. Finally, wash it off using lukewarm water for bright, healthy-looking skin!

Turmeric is an amazing color corrector. Most of your scars and dark patches are purple or have purple undertones. Yellow falls on the opposite end of purple, on the color wheel. So the yellow of the turmeric cancels out the purple of the scars and pigmentation, giving you flawless, bright skin. Mix some turmeric paste with a little bit of honey and milk and apply all over your face and neck in a thick layer. Let it dry and then wash off with lukewarm water. Repeat this at least once a week for long-lasting results that will be visible within the first few applications!
