I used to feel stressed all the time, it was as if anxiety was my neighbor constantly knocking on my door. Learning to be a free spirit didn’t come naturally to me. It was very difficult at first, but I knew that it was important for my health and my wellbeing. And now I believe that being a free spirit not only helps you deal with your anxiety and worries, but also helps you function way better.

Before I share with you some of my experiences or tips on how to be a free spirit, I think it is important we understand what a free spirit is.

What exactly is a free spirit?

To go with the flow of life, instead of opposing it at every turn, is what it means to be a free spirit. If you are comfortable in your skin, if you accept things for what they are and don’t struggle trying to change everything to suit your preference, then you are a free spirit. If you accept sorrow for what it is, and embrace happiness as a fleeting emotion, then, yes, you are a free spirit.

A free spirit is a positive human being, but not one who chokes others with their optimism. They keep their cool no matter how tense the situation. They believe nothing can be achieved by losing control over yourself.

Now that we have some idea what it means to be a free spirit, let me help you with how to become one; let me teach you how to become a person who is independent, one who loves life without conditions, one who embraces everyone and themselves, warts and all.

How to be a free spirit

Let me share with you a guide I came with while making the transition. Remember being a free spirit does not mean you have to climb the Himalayas and leave with red pandas while munching on bamboo shoots. Becoming a free-spirit is a journey of the mind, one that can be achieved while living anywhere.

  1. Control your mind

Our mind is fabulous as long as it is helping us. If it turns against us, then that is a danger more serious than anything else. You know autoimmune diseases, right, where the immune system turns on against the body, how what is supposed to protect, starts harming? Letting your mind control you, is something similar, and should be corrected immediately.

Learn to look at things differently and not just as the mind tells you to. If your morning is not that good, and in the past this has meant that your whole day will go badly, don’t let your mind coax you into believing that is the rule. Laugh it off instead, and focus on the million other good things that are happening in your life. Count your blessings. That way you will train your mind to focus on the positives and not pay too much attention to the negatives.

  1. Don’t lug around the baggage of the past

Like while traveling it is best to travel light, similarly in life, lugging around the baggage of the past will only contribute to you paying more for a ticket, running the risk of missing the flight of opportunities, and having a horrible back ache from all the dragging. Doesn’t sound like a fun trip, does it?

To become a free spirit, get rid of the emotions and memories that have no use in your current life.

  1. Let go of grudges

When you hold a grudge against someone, you make them the most powerful triggers in your life. A slight mention of their name, and your entire day is ruined. Forgive and forget may be a clichéd phrase, but like all clichés, this one is true to. Forget, not for them, but for your own mental health and wellbeing. This is the best way to invite positive energy into your life, which automatically will leave less space for negativity, thus asking it politely to leave and find some other place to reside in.

  1. Make nature your friend

Are you aware of grounding exercises? Well, these are workouts that need you to touch the earth with your bare skin. Go to a park, and walk barefoot on the grass there, and notice how you feel. This isn’t just calming for your mind, but does a great deal of good for your eyes. You can also lie on down the grass, allowing your bare skin to touch the earth. This will not only reduce your stress level, but also improve your immune system, while allowing you to think more positive thoughts.

  1. Always be positive

I know this is easier said than done, but trust me, it is worth the effort. I have kept this for the last in the guide because, one, the other steps will prepare you for this step, and two, this is the ultimate way to reach Zen.

If you don’t want to lose your sanity, and want to be able to do all the things you have always wanted to do and contribute to others around you, then a positive attitude is key.

Why one should become a free spirit

If you are still in two minds about becoming a free-spirited person, then let me tell you why you need to become one in this last section.

Now that you know what a free spirit is and how to become one, I am sure you have already imagined the good things that can come from being a free spirit. Your mind is under our control, your stress is reduced, you are independent of disappointments, you have more clarity of thought, you have learned the art of forgiving, and you are on your way to Zen. If these are not reasons enough to be a free spirit, then I don’t know what is.
