Curly hair has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. While the coils, whether big or loose and tight, have been a fashion fad for centuries, they are extremely difficult to manage. In today’s post, we will tell you all about the safest, easiest and undoubtedly the best curly hair treatment at home.

Curly hair has a tendency to frizz, especially when the humidity in the atmosphere is high. Also, this hair type is more susceptible to split ends, breakage and thinning. Using a brush to tame the curls, can make things worse because these girls like to stay wild. Therefore, the first hair care rule for curls is to lower the frizz by keeping your hair well-nourished and conditioned.

You can invest in a number of products available in the market to take care of your curls, to smooth them and soften them. However, though these products will give you quick results, they will not serve as long-term solutions to your hair problem. On the contrary, these formulas might even wreak more havoc on your hair when used on a regular basis.

The natural treatments discussed in this post are all easy to find and prepare, and yet they are an effective and lasting solution to your curly hair problems.

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

The best natural ingredient that you can rely on to take care of your unruly curls is apple cider vinegar. The vinegar’s acidic properties help maintain the natural pH level of your tresses. When the acid-base level of your hair is balanced, your hair will automatically become less frizzy and have a natural luster.

Apple cider vinegar also works as an organic clarifier, which helps cleanse the hair thoroughly by getting rid of the dirt and oil buildup.

For the treatment, all you need to do is mix apple cider vinegar with water in the ratio 1:1. Now use this diluted solution of the vinegar as a last rinse after every shampoo. Leave the solution on for a couple of minutes and then rise it out with cool water.

This therapy should be followed once or twice a month depending on how damaged your hair is.

2. Beer

I don’t know if you are aware that beer can actually improve the quality of your curly hair by replenishing the moisture content in your hair. The drink not only revitalizes your hair, but also makes it more lustrous and bouncy.

To treat your curly hair, it is recommended that you use non-alcoholic dark beer.

For the treatment, clean your hair with your regular shampoo and cleanse it thoroughly with water. Now slowly pour the nonalcoholic beer over your hair. Try to make sure that each of your tresses get coated. Leave the beer on for about six to seven minutes and then rinse your hair with cold water.

This treatment should not be repeated more than one every two weeks.

3. Hot Oil Massage

Nothing can ever beat a hot oil massage when it comes to treating your damaged curls. The oil will help stop the frizzing and add the necessary moisture to your locks. For the massage you can use any carrier oil like olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil or even almond oil.

Heat the oil of your choice for a couple of minutes, and then once the oil is comfortably warm, apply it on your scalp. Massage gently for five minutes, and then apply the oil on your hair shafts, from root to tip. Leave the oil on for half an hour at least. You can either wear a shower cap or even wrap your hair with a warm towel.

After 30 minutes, wash your hair with your regular shampoo, and then condition it. This treatment can be repeated thrice a week.

4. Eggs

The moisture that curly hair needs is supplied by eggs easily which makes them such an amazing treatment for dry curly hair. The high protein content in eggs and the fat in the yolk can actually restore the health of your hair in no time.

For the treatment, prepare a hair mask by whisking an egg, one and a half tablespoons of olive oil and two teaspoons of mayonnaise. Apply this mask on your hair and leave it on for half an hour. Now wash your hair with cold water and see how instantly your hair looks healthier than before.

The other hair mask that you can prepare involves a beaten egg, four teaspoons of olive oil, and a quarter of a cup of pureed cucumber. Apply this mix on your scalp and then from the root of your hair to the tip. Leave the mask on for 0 minutes, and then using your regular shampoo, wash your hair.

To lower the frizz in your hair and to give the curls more definition, use carbonated water. Carbonated or sparkling water has a very low pH level, and thus, it clarifies your hair, making it softer and shinier in no time.

For this curly hair treatment, you need to dilute some non-flavored sparkling water with plain water mixed in the ratio of 1:1. After your regular shampoo, use this diluted carbonated water for the last rinse. Allow your hair to air dry.

6. Honey

This natural humectant can work wonders on your hair by restoring and locking the moisture in the cuticles. For the treatment all you need to do is mix warm honey and extra-virgin coconut oil in equal amounts. You can use olive oil in place of coconut oil as the carrier if you want. Apply the mix on your hair and leave it on for half an hour. Wash your hair using a mild shampoo.

This treatment should be followed once every week.

According to Dr Surbhi, MD Skin,

“Hibiscus leaves have a promoting action on hair growth according to scientific studies. The leaves of Hibiscus can be crushed and applied on hair root to promote hair growth. Alternatively, you can make hair regrowth oil by dipping 10 to 15 leaves of Hibiscus in coconut oil completely then leave the mixture for 3- 6 weeks in cool dark place. Strain the coconut oil to remove leaves. This oil can now be used for massaging the hair. For best results, you can add curry leaves in this mixture. Heat about 10 washed hibiscus flowers and add a cup of virgin coconut oil. Boil until the flowers are charred. Now apply this oil on your scalp and the hair shafts, and massage for about 10-odd minutes. Wash the hair with lukewarm water after 30 minutes, and apply your regular conditioner.

The other treatment that you can try at home involves grinding about 4 hibiscus leaves and two hibiscus flowers. Add some water and prepare a thin mix. Apply this mix on your hair and leave it on for 20 minutes. Now rinse it off with lukewarm water and let it air dry.

Additional Tips

  • Stop using flat irons, curling irons and other heat styling tools.
  • It is not a good idea to wash your hair every day.
  • Invest in the right hair care products.
  • If you swim regularly in chlorinated water, then it can wreak hell on your hair. Try using a clarifying shampoo and conditioner every time you swim. Also, it is highly recommended that you use a swim/shower cap while swimming.
  • When applying your conditioner, be sure to apply it an inch away from your root. Also, only use a cherry-sized amount of the conditioner or else your hair will end up looking really greasy.
  • To keep your hair hydrated, you can deep condition it once every month.
  • After every wash, detangle your curls with your fingers while your hair is still damp. You can also use a wide-toothed comb for this. This will help prevent breakage of the weak tresses.
  • Do not towel dry your curls. Also avoid using hair dryers. Air drying is the best option.
  • Every two months, get your hair trimmed. This will help prevent split ends.
