15 Awesome Life Lessons I Learnt From Sex And The City

If you think that SATC is only about estrogen-fueled conversations discussing Cosmopolitan and Vogue, female sexual escapades, and four hot women suffering from a constant need to overdress, you are missing the point of the show. Above anything, Sex and the City is a series that addresses issues that all girls can relate to. It includes lessons on how women can deal with sexuality, love, relationships and more so that they can overcome everything that life throws at them!

As a woman myself, I have always flaunted the love that I feel for the show and its leading ladies. I cannot say that I am a twin to the emotional Carrie Bradshaw or the highly sexual Samantha Jones or the career-oriented Miranda Hobbes or even the naïve Charlotte York Goldenblatt, but I have related to each of these beauties at one point or another.

I believe this ability to see ourselves in these four women is why the show has become such an influential television phenomenon all over the world. After watching countless re-runs and reveling in each episode’s quirky stories, here is a list of the 15 biggest life lessons that I learned from Sex and the City.

1. “Maybe our girlfriends are our soulmates and guys are just people to have fun with.”

Men will come and men will go, but girlfriends will always be there! Learning this very early in life taught me that falling in love in no way meant I would stay in love forever. Through this flux of lovers, it will be my girlfriends who’ll stick with me no matter what. Endless love and commitment: isn’t that what the whole soul mate deal is about?

2. “Better alone than badly accompanied.”

If you tell me about your friends, I can easily identify the kind of person that you are. A mirror might just reflect your appearance, but the company you associate yourself with reflects who you really are. Move around with eagles and rise to great heights; hang around lowlifes and you’ll live in the gutter! The choice is yours.

P.S.: Also learn to enjoy your own company—and hold yourself to an equally high standard!

3. “Love is dangerous, if you know it’s dangerous, that makes you treasure it, and you’ll work harder to keep it.”

As I’m revisiting these quotes, I am falling back in love with SATC! Well, was I ever out of love? Nah!

The vulnerability of things makes us cherish them more, and what can be more delicate than true love? Once you have found them, treasure them! Simple.

4. “Maybe that’s the problem. Your expectations were too high.”

If “a good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving,” then how can you force your love to fit one mold? If you give your lover a short string, they will find a way to use it to hang themselves—and then the only thing dying a miserable death will be love.

5. “I can safely conclude that we are single because we want to be.”

If we are confident in ourselves, we don’t end up in places where we don’t want to spend time, and we don’t become people that we don’t’ want to be. Plain and simple! There are no ‘just by chances’ when it comes to love and life. Everything is pre-planned and happens for a reason. If you are with someone who you think is the person of your dreams, it must have been meant to be. But similarly, if you find yourself dating your own self, chasing your dreams, believing in the here and now, then this was meant to be too.

6. “I think, when men tell women to lose weight, it’s a diversion from their own lack of size in certain areas.”

This is the best among all life lessons that SATC taught me. Underneath the humor, it tells us that if someone breaks up with us, it is not because there’s something missing in us, but because that person is incomplete. Now, there could be two things happening here. First, they could expect us to complete them, which isn’t always possible. Second, and more likely, they are intimidated by us. In both cases, we glad it’s over!

7. “I don’t know. There are so many beautiful girls around, that after a while you start looking for someone, who can make you laugh.”

Beauty is skin-deep and pretty lassies are plenty, so what a man really wants is one “who can make him laugh.” She will make fun of him, not take anything too seriously (not to be mistaken for lack of intensity!), and constantly look for ways to make him laugh! A girl like this makes the road not only bearable but a fun party! Wouldn’t you want to be that girl?!

8. “And finally, the most important break up rule: no matter who broke your heart, or how long it takes to heal, you’ll never go through it, without your friends.”

Sex and the City and its life lessons are the sole reasons behind why my relationships were so sorted and drama-free. Whenever there was a need to vent my heart out about whether “I was blind in dating that moron,” I had my besties to support me. Sorting out your problems with your friends can be the ultimate catharsis!

9. “While women are certainly no strangers to faking it… we faked our hair colour, cup-size. Hell, we’ve even faked fur. I couldn’t help but wonder, has fear of being alone suddenly raised the bar on faking? Is it better to fake it than be alone?”

Pretense is a relationship killer. Maybe it doesn’t do any harm instantly, but like poison it spreads throughout the relationship until it has destroyed them completely! As social beings, we have an inherent instinct to fear being solitary and lonesome. But just to shy away from that by hiding behind the veil of make-believe is a complete no-no. You don’t only end up ruining your life, but also the lives of everyone else involved.

10. “Do you need distance, to get close?”

“Coz you only know your lover when you let her go!” The yearning for another in their absence makes you realize how badly you need them for your survival! Yes, true love is born out of desperation; if not, it’s not really love at all!

11. “And we were dressed from head to toe in love, the only label that never goes out of style.”

Everything in life is fleeting. Everything, but love. Love never dies and thus we should never lose faith and give up. You know you are in love when the happiness of someone else becomes more important to you than your own happiness. How can something as great as love go out of style?

12. “Men are sh*t.”

And with this quote, it seems all of the mysteries of the world have come to an end. You now know why they flirt, why it’s easy for them to move on, and most importantly, why they aren’t always worthy of your time or love. Surround yourself with men who defy this quote and give the rest of them the cold shoulder.

13. “If you’re single, the world is your smorgasbord!”

You can travel whenever you want and wherever you want, fearlessly flirt, peacefully sleep, and generally do whatever you want! And you thought being single was a lonely life. Well, my friend, there’s a thin line between being lonely and being alone! Happily singledom, the best place to be!

14. “I disagree. I believe there’s one perfect person out there to complete you.”

My poor Charlotte… always sugar coating everything a little too much! But if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find a couple of life lessons right there. Sometimes hope is all that you can hold on to when it comes to looking for love. And finding the ‘perfect one’? Well, that depends on what you call perfect!

15. “Don’t forget to fall in love with yourself first.”

If you fill your heart with love for yourself, you are sure to attract others who love you too. In the end, it doesn’t matter what others judge you to be, but instead how you see yourself. “Go ahead and love the world, but don’t forget to love yourself (first!), because ‘kid’ we are too much!”

Over the course of its long and successful run, Sex and the City served as an unofficial guide on love, life, relationships, and being a woman! As my oldest friend with timeless life lessons, it is a must-watch for anyone looking to learn a bit more about themselves and their relationships through a world of humor and glamor.

“If my doctor told me I had only six minutes to live, I wouldn't brood. I'd type a little faster.” This Isaac Asimov line, embraces my love for writing in the finest and most desperate way that it is and should be! I was tormented by the earnestness of the written word not very early in my journey. But once smitten, it has helped me devour life twice over; savoring the moment and indulging in its memories. As a flâneuse, I wander to understand the intricacies of human relationships. Realizing that, they are just different manifestations of the same feeling of love, has been my greatest learning. I seek to share its opulence through the words I type.
