21 Daily Struggles Of Women Who Just Cannot Cook

‘Beta, khana banana seekh lo, ladkiyon ko aana chahiye.’

You’ve heard the whole ‘girls must know how to cook’ rant from everyone growing up. You boo-ed it away as the stuff of last generation, gave long speeches about equality and feminism and how girls don’t need to cook anymore.  And now you are staring at the takeaway menu from the local restaurant while you can feel your pristine kitchen mocking your cooking skills.

Whether you want to cook or not, cooking remains a basic life skill- especially so when you live alone. If yours’ is the plight I describe above, you’ll relate to these daily struggles of not being able to cook –

1. Take an egg, pop into boiling water and peel- it’s a cakewalk- say your ‘masterchef’ kinda friends. And you can show them ways to mess it up! 😀

2. The toaster has a timer to make the perfect toast but even that seems to rebel leaving you with evenly blackened toasts! ☹

3. Those exciting five ingredient recipe videos that come up on your Facebook feed, that inspire and motivate you to venture into the kitchen. MISLEADING. You can never get them right. X(

4. How much is a teaspoon, a tablespoon or even a cup?! Following a recipe seems more difficult than giving directions to the food delivery guy.

5. All your recent calls and favorite contacts are of nearby restaurants. You know all the food delivery guys on a first name basis and eventually don’t even have to give directions! 😀

6. Your phone doesn’t hang up because of an overdose of game apps or social apps as much as from constant usage of food delivery apps and restaurants apps.

7. Even Nutella has lost its charm and you just can’t bear to eat bread or corn flakes anymore. You are left craving for hot food for breakfast.

8. And all those cravings for hot and fresh food leave a big hole in your pocket, from all those food deliveries and restaurant visits. Come month end and you are bankrupt and hangry!!

9. You manage to get hurt every time you attempt to cook- be it getting burnt by the tawa or as ridiculous as cutting yourself while slicing bread! ☹

10. Salivating over food boards on Pinterest is one thing but attempting to make those ‘easy’ recipes at your home is no less than a natural disaster! :-/

11. Maybe, just maybe you figure out a recipe, go shopping but you always get the measurements wrong! You end up either with just one bowl of rice or a basket full of pasta.

12. You are all geared up to give it all you have and enter the kitchen blazing guns, but the first hurdle you realize is not having the pots or pans to carry out the operation! *cry on cue*

13. Your colleague’s lunch box or a friend’s invite for lunch at their home makes you well up with tears. The thought of homemade food gets you all emotional and moist eyed.

14. By now you know ‘Muffin in a cup,’ ‘cake in a cup’ recipes are such big shams, for you baking is cooking nirvana. You want to experience delicious smells wafting your kitchen but it’s unachievable.

15. Ready to cook is simple right? Open the packet, follow simple instructions and your food is ready. Umm nope, IRL the dish looks nothing like on the cover! <sobs>

16. Potlucks is where everyone displays their culinary finesse and you take the wine and store bought desserts because after all, what can you bring! :/

17. You follow all the instructions to the T and yet you end up with ‘tooth breaking’ cookies, wonder why? Oh yes, you forgot the baking powder. Forgetting ingredients is second nature.

18. Either you forget or you compensate the good things so much that you realize the adage ‘too much is too bad!’

19. And that fateful day arrives when after somehow trudging along adulthood, you meet a guy who wants your ‘haath ka bana khana’ and that leaves you in a tizzy.

20. But once in awhile you relent and handle a meal like a project, doing a great job only to realize that a meal that took you hours finished in minutes, leaving a trail of dirty dishes. NOT worth it.
