Cobie Smulders Cancer Scare: ‘I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at 25’

Celebrities live their lives under the scrutiny of the media, but however much an outsider might think they know about some celebrity, they all have their own journeys and inner battles that they fight, away from the public eye. One such celebrity who battled cancer and came out victorious on the other side is Cobie Smulders, our beloved Robin Scherbatsky from the sitcom How I Met Your Mother.

The brunette beauty who has posed topless on the cover of the latest issue of Women’s Health Magazine, revealed that she was diagnosed with the potentially-fatal ovarian cancer when she was just 25 years old. That would be during the third season of HIMYM. Over the next two years, Smulders underwent numerous surgeries instead of chemotherapy and radiation due to the location of the cancerous tissue.

Opening up about her battle against the dreaded cancer, the 33-year-old star of Avengers: Age of Ultron said,

“I had tumors on both ovaries, and the cancer had spread into my lymph nodes and surrounding tissues.”

Following the extensive surgeries, Smulders was left with one-third of an ovary, which, the doctors told her would not be conducive to conceiving naturally – ever. Yet, she got pregnant with daughter, Shaelyn, who is five years old now. Smulders married Saturday Night Live star Taran Killam in 2012, and the couple welcomed a son just three months ago.

The former HIMYM star, who shows off her toned post pregnancy body on the cover of the magazine, admitted that she felt that she’d never feel free of the dreaded disease, even after five years of beating it.

“I don’t think I’ll ever feel like I’m cancer-free,” shared Smulders. “I haven’t had any surgeries for it in five years. By some standards, [that means] you’re cancer-free.”

She further said,

“Now that I’m five years out, I’m trying to think of it as a positive thing and what can I learn from it. And if I can create more awareness, I’ll do it.”

Although she might feel like the disease is haunting her, the brave actress wants to channel her battle towards a positive thing like helping raise awareness of ovarian cancer. The potentially-fatal disease killed around 14,000 women last year.

Speaking about posing topless for the cover of the magazine, Cobie explained that the agreed to do so to prove that she is confident of her body, rather than come across as just sexy.

She said,

“It was my first topless photo shoot where I wasn’t trying to appear ‘sexy,’ which was interesting. Because it’s a women’s magazine, I feel like being topless is more about being confident and about being happy with your body rather than trying to excite somebody else. That’s what this cover was more about.”

Further, the brunette beauty shared some advice for young people just entering show business. She said,

“Just chill the F out, when you’re young, you’re so worried. I think I was in such a rush to grow up. I think it’s also the film industry; you’re always trying to be established and trying to get to the next level.”

She continued,

“I feel like I should’ve just chilled out, gone back to college for four years and just hung out. Or traveled around the world or something. Just not work so hard. But then, it also got me to where I am today, so it’s a double-edged sword. But I think I could’ve probably mellowed out more.”

And how has the cancer changed Cobie?

“Like, you know what? I’m just going to do things. I’m just going to take advantage of life and enjoy myself and not get so stressed out,” she explained. “And that’s been my mentality ever since.”

Kudos, Cobie! We wish you all the success and good health in the coming years!
